Baby Boy Y’s Birth

Baby Y came faster than expected!  Mama called me early in the morning to tell me she was going to the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Orange County, but she was sure she wasn’t that far along. A little while later her husband called and told me she was 8 centimeters dilated and could I please come quickly? Luckily, I was able to get there on time despite the hour drive from Los Angeles to Orange County. I think Mama actually held off pushing until I got there! I was there but an hour before Little Y was born. At Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Orange County, they have a team of midwives and doctors who deliver babies. Since Baby Y was considered a low risk delivery, a midwife attended. She let Mama pull Baby Y from her womb and up onto her chest. What a gift!

I will let the pictures, and a poem, do the rest of the talking.

O Me! O Life!

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

That you are here—that life exists and identity,

That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

“That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?”

Poem by Walt Whitman
As performed by Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society

the threads of our selves before there was a we have become entwined

we are a strong knit, having been tightly knit

to whom that holds the knitting hook, I am forever grateful

as we were woven into a quilt of love larger than the sum of us

the early craft was easy

we were inseparable in our lust

separated from our previous selves we became us

when we came up to breathe

we found we had already been woven into a tapestry

perfect in its newness, the yarn sleek and shiny

the tears began as we tested our love’s limits

testing how strong the weave was

small tears that were easily reparable with words of sorry

and kisses

as the years have gone on, however, the rips and tears have grown larger

more mature, our knit more stressed and frayed

not so easily knotted back under and over with words

we have learned that only

continued kindness

constant contact

making an effort

putting each other first

can overcome the tests to our thread.

our love is comfortable and warm,

no longer shiny but worn and repaired

to whom that holds the knitting hook, I am forever grateful

to those that have taught us how to repair, I am forever grateful

to you, my fellow thread, I am forever grateful

Little Baby Boy G’s Birth

Baby G’s Mama called me up a week before her due date. She told me she was going to the doctor but that she had to bring her hospital bag because she didn’t know if they would admit her to the hospital or not. She had gestational diabetes which can lead to several complications, one of them being a baby who is under stress and needs to come out early.

She called several hours later saying that she had been admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and her labor was starting to be induced with pitocin. I was able to rush over there thinking she would already have her support team of her doula and husband assembled, but when I walked in she was alone in the room working on a paper that was due that day! I definitely knew she was not to the uncomfortable stage yet, as she was relaxed and talkative, and I also knew she probably would not finish that paper on time!!!

Her husband came straight to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from the desert where he had been filming a commercial, and they had not seen each other for a whole week! Needless to say, the reunion was heartfelt, as excitement for the impending birth filled the room.

The quality of care she received from Cedars-Sinai nurses, and her doctor was incredible. They were patient and calm and explained every procedure in detail. Because she was induced and the baby was showing signs of stress, she had to wear a fetal monitor at all times and an oxygen mask at intervals to make sure the baby was getting enough oxygen. She also had to check her blood sugar several times. Despite these complications, the nurses and doctors helped her make her desire for a natural delivery possible. Her doula was also invaluable. She kept mama calm and centered, and was her emotional and mental leader. To watch the dynamic between them left me in awe of the strength and power of compassionate support during labor and delivery. Mama also brought some prayer and meditation objects while meditative music and candlelight filled the room. It truly was an east meets west delivery.

After many hours of laboring, Mama was ready to push. Suddenly a team of over 8 Cedars-Sinai nurses and her doctor came into the room to prepare for the delivery. Baby Boy G was delivered soon after midnight and was healthy. Needless to say, we were all overjoyed!

cedars-sinai birth 2First he received kisses and cuddles from Mama on her chest, and after a little while Daddy cut his umbilical cord. Then the Cedars-Sinai pediatric nurses took him to be assessed, weighed, measured, and to receive his first diaper!

Capturing these first moments of bonding between baby boy and his Daddy were precious, and did not leave this mama with dry eyes! Also, newborn expressions are just the best!

Of course nursing and cuddling with Mama was equally as precious. I am so honored that I was able to capture these first intimate moments in Baby Boy G’s and his parents’ new life together.

A big shout out of gratitude goes to the nurses and doctors of Cedar-Sinai Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Department for going above and beyond for a safe and healthy delivery for Baby Boy G. It was an experience I will never forget!

The Liebermans

The twins have each been in my daughter’s grade school classes, so Adina, Matt and I have become friends these past two years. Adina is a “Redkin Rockstar” and travels worldwide speaking and teaching for Redkin. I have had the pleasure of sitting in her salon chair and boy does she do a mean cut and color. So when we decided a long time ago to do a family photo shoot, I knew it would be nothing less than flippin’ F-U-N.

We decided to shoot at Venice Beach because the boys in the family love to skate. When I asked Adina what the girls would do while they skated, she quipped, “Be beautiful.” and of course they were:

And here are the menfolk doin’ their sk8 thang…

But that was at the end. Let’s go back to the beginning, shall we?

I ventured around Venice Beach looking for locations to shoot, but also just to take in the view…tons of people, all with interesting visual tales to tell. But that is for another post. Here are a few of the environmental shots I took:

The rules for the skate park at Venice Beach are pretty extensive and so I had to get a shot of them, plus the cars that day at Venice Beach were, shall we say, unusual? And of course what kid doesn’t love a warm slice of pizza for early dinner?venice2

This family has blue eyes and shoes for days:

While getting ready for the family photo shoot I captured Adina doing what she does best: styling her daughter’s hair. You can take the girl out of the salon but not the salon out of the girl!

The Family that plays together, stays together! Thanks Adina and Matt for letting me spend the afternoon with your Bada$$ family! What a great choice of location – to skate and have fun in the sun at Venice Beach while showcasing your colorful, fun and beautiful family. Until next time…

Kristen Burtch and Angela Clouse Family Photos

Recently I took family / couple portraits at Griffith Park here in Los Angeles.

We are all photographers so we got together and shared our craft with each other.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you two of my favorite couples:

Kristen + Alex + Bailey = Burtch Photography

Angela + Jamey = Angela Clouse Lifestyle Photographer

First up, Kristen (otherwise known as my name sister) and her genius husband Alex and sweet newly adopted Bailey show their family love:

When I say love I mean L-O-V-E. Aren’t they precious?

KristenPapacPhotography-2 copy 3

The fall leaves at Griffith Park add a nice touch, don’t they? Along with winter sweaters and boots, you really can feel the crisp fall breeze…

alas, we live in Los Angeles, so like Hollywood we do a great job at pretending!

But yes, leaves on the ground does equal fall around Los Angeles.

Angela and Jamey SAY they haven’t taken couples portraits in well, about a decade, but I’m barely believing them.

They look like seasoned PROS!

Jamey is a film guy and directed a couple of very cinematic shots for our session! It’s easy to make use of the backdrops at the Old Zoo Picnic Area in Griffith Park.

Yes, literally, those are old wild animal enclosures:

Dramatic, right?

Can you tell we have fun when we get together? Angela is really the cinema star with her handsome leading man! When you get together several photographers and a film director, you never quite know what will happen. I am so glad we took advantage of the Old Zoo Picnic Area at Griffith Park to make some holiday memories for our families (shout out to our location scouts!) I know I will be using our photos as gifts for family and Christmas cards for friends. As Kristen said, “I cannot stop staring at them.” We got to taste what our clients feel for a moment…the giddy feeling of seeing your portraits come to life.

Do you use your Smartphone, mama? So do we professional photographers!

Oh, did you know?

I have two children and I snap photos of them on my iPhone incessantly? What, you haven’t been following my Facebook posts or my Instagram feed?

Do you have an iPhone, mama? A Smartphone, mama?

I think as a modern parents we are programmed to want to capture every instance of our children’s life. However, I cannot be toting around my Nikon DSLR everywhere, people. Even though I love it to death. Almost as much as my children.

For day to day life my iPhone wins. It is always with me, takes truly good pictures, and even video! What more can a parent ask for?

So yes, you can take amazing photos on an iPhone. Most top photographers I know are on Instagram, and they even tell you when the photo they’re sharing is captured with their iPhone or Smartphone.

Without further ado…here are a few of my faves from the last couple of months. Maybe this will become a new weekly blog thing? You know, in case you missed my personal Facebook posts, or Instagram feed. or… Gah!

Let me be clear lest you misunderstand…this is only for day to day usage. When it comes to taking photos for that wall canvas or for Christmas cards, and iPhone just doesn’t cut it for me. Maybe I’ll explain why in the future…but for now, enjoy these cuties!

Muse and Creator + Kristen Papac Photography Collaboration – Amanda and Bill – Sneak Peek

Amanda and Bill walked into the studio prepared…make-up done for the former, hair coiffed for both, and outfits all in a row. They were a bit nervous, as most people are before a photo shoot, as was I. Admittedly, this was only my second engagement portrait session. Ever. However, inside I knew this was going to be a very special shoot.

My friend, the talented Geoffrey Rowe Lbipp, of Muse and Creator, had invited me to second shoot and assist him for this engagement session. Honored doesn’t quite explain how I felt when he asked me! He decided to set up a pop-up studio in his new space in Old Town Temecula. It couldn’t be a more perfect spot for an engagement portrait session for this country loving pair.

And it was a special shoot…everything just went smoothly, we had lots of laughs, and Amanda and Bill really got into it by the end! Now I know that if that feeling of warmth mixed with a little bit of lust and romance tickles all of us by the end, then we’ve done our job well.

Rebecca Rasmussen, Published Author

Rebecca Rasmussen and I met through our children’s preschool. We were both new to Los Angeles and getting our bearings. She, having hailed from the mid-west, was enthralled with California’s natural beauty and sunny weather.

After a while it came out that she is a published novelist. I have to admit, when I found that out I was literally amazed to have a celebrity in our presence. 😉 I guess I’m like Oprah when it comes to authors!

When she contacted me about the possibility of taking portraits for her new book coming out this summer, I felt incredibly honored. We went up to Topanga Canyon to capture her beauty amongst the rolling Golden Hills of California at sunset. This was very appropriate considering her novels deal with place as a through line, and she is greatly enjoying her time here in Southern California.

You can find out more about Rebecca and her first novel here: The Bird Sisters, A Novel by Rebecca Rasmussen

Or like her Facebook Page: The Birdsisters to hear more news about her upcoming novel!
